About me

Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in English, Bos/Cro/Serbian, German

Mag. Branka Milic - psychotherapist/psychoanalyst

I am a licensed psychotherapist for psychoanalytically oriented or psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, registered with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health.

My professional work spans clinical practice, scientific inquiry, and engagement in higher education.

Clinical Practice

Clinical work is my main professional focus, which I have pursued as a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst at Praxis Loewengasse since 2013. My practice primarily involves working with individuals from various cultural and international backgrounds who have faced challenging experiences related to emotional states, behaviors, and/or interpersonal difficulties. For the clinical case presentation of a psychoanalytic treatment of anxiety in a person with a congenital heart defect (CHD), I was awarded the Waltraud Wiesinger Prize by Sigmund Freud University, Vienna.

Science and Systematic Data Analysis

In psychotherapy, personal reflections grounded in clinical observations play a vital role in understanding the therapeutic process, the richness of individual human experience, and possibly inform clinical decisions. At the same time, the advancement of the field depends on recognizing the importance of systematic data analysis: structured research that critically evaluates available evidence that can be tested, replicated, and refined.

Although scientific rigor and the findings derived from it may never fully capture the depth and uniqueness of individual human experience, they offer a valuable framework that helps shape and inform responsible clinical work – which should be the standard for high-quality psychotherapy.

In line with this view, I am currently a doctoral candidate at the Medical University of Vienna (e.g.). My project focuses on identifying markers for clinical conditions, combined with conducting a systematic study of psychotherapeutic outcomes. The research is supported by a grant from the American Psychoanalytic Association (ApsA) awarded for the pilot studies, and it is conducted in cooperation with the European Network for Psychotherapy of Young People with Mental Disorders (e.g.).

Education

I have been a lecturer in the international program at Sigmund Freud University, Vienna, since 2016. Having had personal experience as an international student (Missouri, USA), I am glad to be in a position to share knowledge that stems from my theoretical background, clinical practice, and scientific work.

To my mind, meaningful education should counter superficiality, prevent easy distractibility or 'brain rotting' by fostering tolerance for frustration through deep reading, and encourage intellectual honesty by promoting consideration of multiple sources of information.
